While nearby Santa Barbara is a popular tourist destination, few know the farming and ranching side of the Santa Rita Hills viticultural area. Agriculture in Santa Barbara County topped over one billion dollars annually since 2006 and, through the multiplier effect, contributes nearly three billion to the local economy. One of its strength is its diversity, with more than 40 different crops worth more than a million dollars, including strawberries, broccoli, wine grapes, cut flowers, nursery products, head lettuce, cauliflower, raspberries, blackberries, avocados, lemons, celery, spinach, cabbage, bell peppers, dry beans, and summer squash. They are sold locally, nationally, and exported to 40 different countries.
On #NationalAgDay, we #ThankaFarmer for growing our food with only 0.7% of the water on Earth. And for finding new ways to solve the world’s water crisis. Test your water knowledge at nationalgeographic.com/unchartedwaters. Sponsored by @WinFieldUnited. In partnership with @sustain_ag and @landolakesinc.
