Today, we're proud to announce a new initiative: the Smithsonian's Smells of American History Project. We will examine America's rich history of olfactory experiences, from the early 1700s to today. We'll explore the impacts of new technologies, influential people, and shifts in social and cultural life. ?? "Through research, collections, and sniffing, the Smithsonian Smell History Project will develop programming and exhibitions to help Americans understand the role we all play in shaping the smell of our nation—past and present," said Susan Evans, director of the museum's Programs and Audience Development team. ?? The initiative will explore the era before modern plumbing in depth, delving into what American cities were like when horses were a prevalent form of transportation. Research will also reveal the scent-based experiences of early Americans in rural areas, from the sweet smell of freshly-churned butter to the tapestry of smells resulting from living in close proximity to livestock. ??? Shown here is a pair of brogan-type leather shoes of the type worn by Union soldiers during the Civil War. This pair was issued to a U.S. Army engineer.
