They come to the road in #Niger in search of food. They come looking for water. They come because it’s the only safe place they can find. All of these people have been chased from their villages by #BokoHaram, the Islamist militant group. Many of the displaced came from along the Nigerian border, a fertile area near Lake Chad where they made a living as fishermen or pepper farmers for generations. Some brought their herds and flocks when they fled their villages. Now, cattle, goats, donkeys and chickens compete with people for food and water in a series of roadside villages that have turned into towns of want. @adamfergusonphoto took this picture of a young boy guarding a herd of livestock. This child — along with tens of thousands of other people like him — is stuck in the desert, clinging to the edges of a highway to survive. The road, National Route 1, is not a path to a distant sanctuary, a better life or even a refugee camp. It is, quite literally, a road to nowhere. Visit the link in our profile to read more.
