Unlike most species of seal, the Hawaiian monk seal prefers warmer temperatures and can be found in the tropical waters of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. Sadly, these seals are listed as endangered on the IUCN Redlist. The most significant threats to the Hawaiian monk seal are the changing oceanic conditions caused by climate change. The habitats they thrive in are shrinking due to erosion and food is becoming limited, leading not only to starvation, but also to more deaths of females caused by aggressive males trying to mate in small, crowded habitats. Additionally, these seals are often accidentally caught in fishing nets, and have a high pup mortality rate.
Training with Hawaiian monk seals at the Minnesota Zoo is done first and foremost to help the veterinary staff care and monitor the seal’s heath and body condition. For example, seals learn to open their mouths so their caretakers can make sure their oral health is good shape. The seals are then rewarded with a seafood treat. The choice to participate in the training is completely up to the animal and is done with 100% positive reinforcement.
The @mnzoo is the only place outside of Hawaii where the general public can come face to face with the Hawaiian monk seal, and getting to know this amazing animal leads to a stronger motivation to save it. Guest donations to the zoo help fund research projects with @NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) allowing biologists to track Hawaiian monk seals in hopes to better understand the threats they face.
