New York City, the home of wonders like the Brooklyn Bridge, is welcoming cable-stayed bridges once again. By 2018, the city will have 3 new gateways — including 2 parallel bridges that are replacing the deeply loathed #Kosciuszko Bridge. Recently, @jakenaughton photographed the almost-completed new “K Bridge,” as officials call it to avoid saying “Kosciuszko.” Traffic between Brooklyn and Queens will begin crossing the first of the 2 parallel bridges tonight. (The original, an ungainly 78-year-old trusswork contraption, will be demolished in a controlled explosion this summer.) Cable-stayed bridges like this one are relatively easy and economical to build. They almost can’t help but look beautiful. And cable-stayed technology will ensure that the new bridges “stand the test of time,” @nygovcuomo said. The first of 2 cable-stayed crossings between Staten Island and Elizabeth, New Jersey, will open in a few months. And next year, the New New York Bridge will replace the Tappan Zee Bridge. These bridges are already transforming the skyline. With luck, they may even improve the drive. #??
