Entitled “My Red Homeland” (2003), this monumental installation is by artist #AnishKapoor. Composed of nearly 25 tons of red, oil-based wax and occupying a circular platform with a diameter of 12 meters, it took about two weeks to install in the gallery. The work is mesmerizing: a heavy steel block with a mechanized arm orbits the base for over an hour, simultaneously building up and destroying the formation of wax in an endless cycle. Through the title, Kapoor indirectly pays homage to his birthplace, India, but focuses more on what he describes as “[his] inner homeland.” It makes us reflect on the concept of homeland as fluid.
