Scimitar-horned oryx were extinct in the wild until 2016 when a reintroduction project led by Environment Agency—Abu Dhabi and the government of Chad brought the large antelope species back to the Sahalen grasslands in Chad.
Two groups of oryx have been reintroduced to the wild so far and a third group will be released this summer. As of March 2017, three calves have been born in the wild, including this one. Wild-born calves are a good sign for recovery of the species.
Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute and Zoological Society of London scientists are monitoring the oryx remotely with satellite collars, and Sahara Conservation Fund scientists are monitoring the animals on the ground in Chad. #EndangeredSpeciesDay
