Two colors of Australian walking sticks at the @nationalaquarium in Baltimore, MD. When threatened, these bugs stand on their front and middle legs, raising and curling their abdomens to appear more like a scorpion. They don’t sting or bite, so this behavior along with their specialized camouflage is their only defense against predators. This species typically reproduces sexually, laying eggs that hatch a few months later. However, if no males are around, females are capable of parthenogenesis, a type of asexual reproduction (no male needed) and development of an unfertilized egg. When this occurs, only female offspring are born.
