I toppled over every day for nearly two years when I was learning Pinchamayurasana. I remember once I got so frustrated with my incessant falling that I actually hit the floor. Can you believe it? It sounds so funny to me now--the idea that I would be so mad that I couldn't do a yoga pose that I'd actually smack the ground. Well, I know what it was about. I used to measure my self-worth by whether or not I could do the poses well. So when I failed it felt like "I" was a failure. This is where so many yogis go wrong. If you measure your self-worth by the shapes you make, you'll always be trying to prove yourself or earn your worth through the accumulation of poses. But if you start off your practice with basic assumption that you are good and whole, well then, practice is meaningful whether you balance perfectly or whether you fall. It's not about the pose. It's about finding the seed of faith in your heart, about turning to the light and about loving yourself enough to believe that you're worth it. _ And a little technique helps too. I had no technique when I started. It was just go up, fall down, try again. I felt like I was beating my head against a brick wall. That's actually the reason I started making tutorials. I wanted to give other students the road map that I made while learning the poses. The latest episode of my series The Encyclopedia of Yoga is up on @omstarsofficial and you guessed it, it's all about Pinchamayurasana.
