@gillessabrie took this photo of a #solarpower farm near Wenquan, a quiet town in China near the border with Kazakhstan. The picturesque town has one short commercial strip, with a hot springs hotel at one end and a museum at the other. In recent years, Wenquan has begun highlighting its #Mongolian heritage. In the 18th century, Mongolian warriors made the long journey to the area when Qianlong — one of the greatest of the Manchu rulers of the Qing dynasty — dispatched a Chahar army to newly conquered territories. Until recently, though, there were few signs of Mongolian culture in Wenquan, where Kazakhs are the largest ethnic group. But when the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ reporter Ed Wong and @gillesabrie visited in March, they found street signs with both Chinese and Mongolian script. A new mural on the main road depicted the ancient caravans. “My family members are descendants of the Mongolians who came under the Qing,” Xiu Yun, a manager at the resort hotel, told Ed. “Mongols are very proud of this history.” She added: “I can speak Mongolian and read and write it. Most Mongolians here can do the same.” Visit the link in our profile to read more, and to see more photos of the area by @gillessabrie.
