“Creativity is the power to reject the past, to change the status quo, and to seek new potential.” – artist Ai Weiwei, whose LEGO portraits are now on view at our @hirshhorn.
With more than 1.2 million LEGOs, “Trace” is a monumental installation stretching throughout the museum’s outer galleries.
It colorfully portrays 176 individuals who—like the artist—have been detained, exiled, or have sought political asylum because of their actions, beliefs, or affiliations. In 2011, Ai Weiwei was detained by the Chinese government for 81 days and then prohibited from traveling abroad until 2015. In a way, it's an extended self-portrait.
Surrounding “Trace” is a 360-degree wallpaper Ai Weiwei created for the @hirshhorn, an intricate graphic print with surveillance cameras, handcuffs, and Twitter birds—symbols of expression and control. "Ai Weiwei: Trace at Hirshhorn" runs through Jan. 1. #AWWHirshhorn
