Who gets to dictate what kind of art belongs in a museum?
When the sculpture, 'Back Seat Dodge '38' by artist Edward Kienholz was exhibited in 1966 at LACMA, The County Board of Supervisors tried to ban the sculpture which portrays a couple engaged in sexual activity in the back seat of the automobile. They threatened to shut down the exhibition but the museum reached a compromise- the sculpture's car door would remain closed and guarded. The door would only be opened to visitors over 18 years old. The attention the sculpture received had hundreds of people lined up to see it person.
From the New York Times : In an interview in 1976 Kienholz explained that he was seeking to portray what was both an actual experience of his, growing up in Washington State near the Idaho border, and what became a common occurrence for adolescents growing up in the new age of the automobile.
Anyhow, Back Seat Dodge '38 is on display at LACMA. Make sure to check out when you come visit.—Guadalupe Rosales (of @veteranas_and_rucas And @map_pointz) #LACMAInstaResidency © Kienholz
