This incredible gold buckle was found at Sutton Hoo. It’s decorated in a style that began to be seen around the late 6th century – graceful animals are interlaced together in a highly ornamented style, and they require patience to untangle. These designs reveal the importance of the natural world in Anglo-Saxon art – different animals likely held different properties or characteristics that could be transferred to the objects they decorated. The snake was a suitable symbol for a high-status man, or even a king. Swipe to see how 13 different animals emerge from this intricate buckle!
