It's time for Trilobite Tuesday! Just a stone's throw from the famed UFO haven of Area 51, and a mere three hour drive from the glittering lights of Las Vegas, there has long been a bit of added panache surrounding the Lower Cambrian outcrops that comprise Nevada's Pioche Shale Formation. While the environs in this part of Lincoln County can often present more than their share of challenges to those in search of fossils, especially with daytime temperatures that routinely reach 115 degrees during summer months, the results of such efforts are usually worth the inherent inconvenience. Captured within these yellow-tinged sedimentary layers are key elements of one of early Earth's most important transitional stages, as the Lower Cambrian fauna slowly began to fade, eventually to be replaced by a flurry of new Middle Cambrian species. Featuring an exotic array of closely-related species of Olenellid trilobites including Bristolia bristolensis (photo), Bristolia nevadensis, Olenellus fowleri and Olenellus chiefensis, which here are all preserved in a golden-hued hematite, the trilobites of the Pioche Shale represent some of the most dramatic and aesthetic fossils to be found anywhere in the world. #trilobitetuesday #trilobitetuesdays #trilobite #trilobites #amnh #naturalhistory #fossil #fossils
