DID YOU KNOW? -The original straight-backed pews which had been in use at St. James for its first 18 years were a source of discomfort to the congregation and concern to the Rector, so in the summer of 1860, a decision was made to alter all the pews by reclining the backs to make them more comfortable. Unfortunately, the enjoyment of the new pews only lasted four years. During the Civil War, the Federal Army looted the church, the seats were torn out and nearly all lost.
In May 1866, the church received $270 towards replacing the pews. These pews were used until the fire of 1964. Only a few fragments survived the blaze.
