8月のサンタ・クルス島の山頂付近は霧が出て湿度が高く、植物の繁茂も旺盛。エル・チャトと呼ばれる地域には、海岸から草を食べにゾウガメが集まります。ゾウガメは巨体の割に用心深くゆったりと生きている感じです。ダーウィンが訪れた頃はテントを張る場所にも困るほどの数だったとか。大航海時代に食料とされたり、入植者が持ち込んだヤギに草を食べられて餓死したりと、受難の時代もありました。現在は人工孵化の甲斐もあり再び増え始めています。

Giant tortoises travel from the beach and gather in the area known as El Chato to eat its delicious grass. In spite of their large size, giant tortoises are gentle and peaceful creatures. It is said that during the time of Darwin's visit to the island, there were so many giant tortoises that it was difficult to find space to put up a tent. Giant tortoises have endured periods of great suffering in the past, as some were eaten during the age of long voyages, some died of starvation due to a depleted grass supply after goats were introduced into the island by settlers, and the like. However, their numbers are now on the rise, also thanks to the artificial incubation of the species.
