What would you wear to Carnival?
In the 1980s, one lucky reveler used this dramatic costume and a mask to transform into a "vejigante," a demon figure from medieval Spanish folklore that has become a staple of Puerto Rican Carnival culture. During Carnival, the vejigantes join the crowds singing and dancing. Most dress in a horned mask (called a "cartera") and an elaborate flowing costume. Typically made in the cities of Ponce and Loiza, cartera masks have become a cultural symbol of Puerto Rico. After the festivities, the masks are often purchased as home decoration by tourists.
