On this day in 1882, the Garden Palace, built in the grounds of the Sydney Domain for the Sydney International Exhibition in 1879, burned to the ground.⠀

Designed in a week and built in less than a year, the grand exhibition building contained inventions, technology, art and ideologies by local and international exhibitors. It opened in 1879 and within seven months more than a million people visited the Palace and adjacent fairground within the Botanical Gardens to be awed by the colony's prosperity.⠀

In the early hours of 22 September 1882 tragedy struck when the palace was engulfed by fire, destroying the building's contents, the foundation collection of Sydney's new Technological and Sanitary Museum, due to open on 1 December 1882. There was no conclusive finding on the cause of the fire.⠀

The rebuilding of the nacent Museum's collection began immediately, and just over a year later the Technological Museum, with 5000 objects, was opened to the public, the precursor to today's MAAS Museum. Many of these objects remain in the Museum's collection today.⠀ ⠀
