Albrecht Dürer made this intricate woodcut print in 1496 or 1497. Woodcuts are made by carving a block to leave raised areas, which become the lines of the final image – swipe to see the original woodblock for this print.
The work shows in gory detail the popular Renaissance subject of Christian martyrs being persecuted by the Romans – the Roman emperors Hadrian and Antoninus Pius are depicted here.
