In honor of #LGBTHistoryMonth, we've invited activist and writer @AdamEli to share a selection of artworks in the Museum’s collection that were made by artists who self-identify as queer or represent queer subjects. This week, Adam looks at the work of Willem Arondeus, a painter, writer, and figure in the Dutch anti-nazi resistance. “I was thrilled to find a piece by one of my queer heroes in The Met’s collection.” Adam shares, “At 17, Arondeus was forced out of his childhood home for being gay. Years later, he was a central figure in the Attack on the Public Records Offices on the Plantage Kerklaan in 1943. Ten days after the attack Arondeus was executed by the Nazi’s and his final words were let it be known that “homosexuals are not cowards.” Willem Arondeus (Dutch, 1894–1943).
