We tried out some 1930s recipes, including Spaghetti Loaf, Marshmallow Mint Salad, Molded Mayonnaise Salad, Surprise Loaf, and Parker House Rolls. Why? Well, for one, we were hungry.
But we also wanted to experience food from a time when a lot was changing. The 1930s witnessed major developments in how Americans ate and thought about food, as well as how they purchased, stored, and prepared it. More than 11 million women were in the workforce by 1930 (11.7% of them were married), and they looked for ways to save time in the kitchen. Many began to replace their messy and inefficient iceboxes with electric refrigerators. By the end of the decade, 60% of American households had one.
Find out how everything tasted on our blog: s.si.edu/1930sEating (Link in profile.) And make sure to check out the #ArchivesPotluck hashtag today! It's an #ArchivesHashtagParty today all about #FoodHistory!
