Red-flanked duikers are one of the smallest species of antelope, reaching heights of just 13-15 inches (34-37 cm). This juvenile, photographed at @thelosangeleszoo, is even smaller than that. Like many ungulate species, mother red-flanked duikers will leave their young alone among the tall grasses of Africa while they forage for food in another area, making it easier to escape a predator without risking the life of their baby. The young remain extremely still and quiet while awaiting their mother’s return. As they grow, red-flanked duikers learn to use their wedge-shaped bodies to slice through the dense brush when evading danger. They have incredibly sensitive hearing and are capable of detecting threats very early on, making sightings of this animal quite rare.
