Photo by @Tim Laman. The newest Great Ape species, The Tapanuli Orangutan, was just described! This is an adult male I photographed in Batang Toru in 2014, when I was lucky enough to have a chance to visit this remote site in Sumatra. The orangutans living there, only about 800 or less, have now been shown to be genetically distinct from both the regular Sumatran Orangutans, and the Bornean Orangutans. They are now scientifically recognized as a distinct species, and of course, are only found in the country of Indonesia.
