Malkah and David Spitalny rode out Hurricane Sandy less than 500 feet from the ocean. “It will never pass, this experience of physically going through it,” Malkah, 65, told @ニューヨーク・タイムズ. “The force was unimaginable. The thunders, the fires — it was beyond comprehension.” The first floor of their apartment in Sea Gate, Brooklyn, was submerged; their clothing and appliances were destroyed; and innumerable family heirlooms stored in the basement were unsalvageable. Yet for the next 4 years, the Spitalnys continued living in their waterlogged home, on the second floor. They had difficulty finding a landlord who would take their Section 8 voucher. But they said their Orthodox Jewish faith has shepherded them through every hardship. “We believe that everything that happens is ultimately decreed by God, by heaven,” David said. “Sometimes things that we go through, there’s a reason we have to go through that, to purify us, to test us, to challenge us.” @dee_bx took this photo of Malkah reading the Tanakh, or Hebrew Bible, at her new home in Kensington, Brooklyn. | Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty — a beneficiary agency of @ujafedny, one of the 8 organizations supported by the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ Neediest Cases Fund — helped the Spitalnys cover their back rent.
