Nancy Ma’s night monkeys like this one photographed at the @Dallas_World_Aquarium are nocturnal and arboreal, spending most of their time in the canopies of Brazil, Colombia and Peru. Their large eyes help them to input more light in order to see better in the dark, and they are highly social and vocal creatures. They communicate with their groups constantly using squeaks, whistles and trills. Though this practice does give away their location to predators, it helps the monkeys more than it harms them by allowing rapid communication when danger is present.
Nancy Ma’s night monkeys are currently listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. The conversion of their rainforest habitats to palm oil plantations is quickly diminishing this primate’s population. To help save them, check labels for palm oil on food and cosmetic items. This ingredient is found in more than half of all packaged products in the US and is one of the main contributors to rainforest fragmentation. If we decrease the demand of palm oil, we can help preserve habitats that these monkeys and countless other species depend on.
