Sonakinatography—sound, motion, notation—was contemporary artist Channa Horwitz’s playful means of exploring and expressing the fourth dimension. Feeling confident in her ability to compose for two and three dimensions, she set out to understand how choreographers and musical composers composed time. Using a graph as a visual description of time, “I made compositions that depicted rhythm visually.” ... “I thought of the compositions as a kind of common language that could be interpreted in different ways.” Sonakinatography has been interpreted by sound, music, movement, dance, light, and animation artists with Horwitz subsequently creating twenty-four Sonakinatography compositions. ... “As an artist I experience freedom through limitation and structure. It would appear that limitation and structure are dichotomies to freedom, but through experience I have found them to be synonymous and the basis of freedom.” Through her continual limitation of choices, Horwitz found an infinite amount of possibilities. ...
