Maria Sibylla Merian’s work was in high demand in the early 18th century, and she produced a huge amount of these stunningly detailed watercolours of plants and animals. She wasn’t working alone – she had the help of her daughter Dorothea Graff. They often worked together on a single sheet. This piece is by Graff, and shows the interesting composition used in their work – the combinations of animals and plants weren’t necessarily seen together in nature. This scarlet ibis lived on the coast of Surinam in South America and wouldn’t have eaten snakes – more likely crabs, molluscs or frogs. See this example of Graff’s brilliant work in our free display about Hans Sloane’s early collections in Room 90a – find out more via the link in our bio. #MariaMerian #MariaSibyllaMerian #DorotheaGraff #watercolour #flowers #drawing #painting #17thCentury #18thCentury #naturalhistory #ibis #snake #bird #Surinam #SouthAmerica
