This fabulously floral bouquet was painted by Maria Sibylla Merian in the late 17th century – she used wreaths like this for the title pages of her scientific books about flowers and plants. She was known to use magnifying glasses to help render the tiniest details in her drawings and paintings. Merian was a pioneering figure at the time – few of her contemporaries could match her sophisticated combination of art and science. She trained both of her daughters to be equally skilful natural history artists – you can see some of their work in our free display about the collections of Hans Sloane in Room 90a.
