Herod the Great / Herod I (74/73 BCE – c. 4 BCE/1 CE) was a Roman client king of Judea. He is partly known for colossal building projects throughout the Herodian kingdom including this summit fortress at Herodium where he lived and was buried. The ruins of Herodium sit atop a truncated cone-shaped hill just a few miles from Jerusalem and Bethlehem, and at At 758m (2,487 ft) above sea level it is the highest peak in the Judaean Desert.
Herod appears in the Christian Gospel of Matthew as the ruler of Judea who orders the Massacre of the Innocents at the time of the birth of Jesus, so as to avoid the loss of his throne. Apart from the bible, there is little evidence that the infanticide ever happened.
