Spiny sand stars like this one photographed at @MontereyBayAquarium can grow up to 7 inches (17 cm) in diameter. They’re known to be quite agile and are able to glide along the sea floor with their tube-like feet. They’re predatory animals and feed mainly on olive snails, consuming just one per day. These beautiful invertebrates can be found in the eastern Pacific Ocean, often hiding beneath a thin layer of sand.
