The bird may be blue, but we’re definitely not—we love it when researchers use our books to support their work with specimens.
Robert Ridgway, the Smithsonian’s first full-time curator of birds, published his 1886 “A Nomenclature of Colors for Naturalists” to describe and compare animals in the field and specimens in the museum. We imagine he would be pleased that it is still being actively used for this purpose.
The bird specimen is “Sialia currucoides,” held in the @SmithsonianNMNH collections.
@SILibraries is taking over the @スミソニアン博物館 Instagram account this week! Follow along as we show a few highlights from our collection and celebrate our 50th anniversary. Learn more at library.si.edu.
