Red-Tailed hawks are a favourite of falconers as they are adaptable and easy to work with. They have a wide-ranging diet, catching and eating anything from other birds to squirrels. They are found across the US and are sometimes referred to as ‘chicken hawks’ - along with a couple of other species of hawks. Red-tailed hawks, like all raptors, have exceptional eyesight. They tend to be sit-and-wait predators and are most commonly seen sitting on fence posts along the edges of roads and fields. When they spot their prey, often mice or small mammals, they fly and strike with amazing speed and agility.
