Their elongated noses act like snorkels, allowing them to breathe while resting in shallow waters. If they are completely submerged for a prolonged amount of time, however, these turtles have adapted processes that include rhythmic movements of their mouth cavity, acting similarly to the gills of fish. Because Burmese peacock softshell turtles are routinely hunted and served as delicacies in some countries, they are currently listed as Endangered.
