“At first glance, speedskating couldn’t be more boring,” the author #KarlOveKnausgaard writes in @nytmag’s Olympics issue. “2 participants on metal blades glide round and around an oval ice track, and no sooner do they cross the finish line then a new pair is sent off to repeat the performance.” All of their movements are nearly identical, which makes it impossible for the casual observer to tell the skillful skaters from the average ones. “But if you keep looking,” Knausgaard explains, “you’ll gradually enter the inner world of speedskating, and from there, from within, speedskating is among the most thrilling of sports.” Idris Khan created this photo illustration of #speedskaters for the cover of @nytmag’s Olympics issue. Jake Silverstein, @nytmag’s editor in chief, calls the layered image “a riot of arms and legs and determined faces” — a perfect cover image for an #Olympics issue focused on the unique appeal and the phenomenal physical challenges involved in each sport of the Winter Games.
