One of the most spectacular events occurring on the Great Barrier Reef is the annual synchronised spawning of corals. The process is triggered by warm summer water temperatures and the full moon, and usually happens only once a year; however, this year scientists witnessed a split spawning event.
The corals determine when is the best time for them based on their location and conditions.
In 2016 and 2017, the Great Barrier Reef suffered massive coral bleaching events that damaged two-thirds of the reef. The 2017 Coral spawning was a critical time for scientists to collect the data needed to help protect coral reefs in a changing ocean.
