Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety Mute swan cygnet – There is so much of wildlife photography that depends on those little moments, moments that can never be planned for but rather simply occur. It’s certainly fair to say that the longer one spends out among nature, watching, photographing etc the more chance that we have of being present when something happens but of course we are completely at the mercy of nature’s little idiosyncrasies. This image as an example took an incredible amount of effort to produce, due almost entirely to the extraordinary bond of trust that I needed to create with the parents but nevertheless this image is elevated both in interest and strength simply due to the way that the cygnets beak is partly covered by her attentive mothers’ plumage. The shot is captured at close quarters and is a vertically downward shot as I stood close to the parent bird whilst shooting on an 80-200mm lens. Even though it was a bright overcast day I had ratcheted up my ISO to 6400 as this allowed me to increase my depth of field to F14 whilst maintaining a fast shutter speed of 1/500th second. I wanted to do this as working at such close quarters has a magnifying effect on any movement that the cygnet might make, such as preening etc and I needed to increase my depth of field to bring as much of the cygnet, and her parent into sharp focus. Otherwise, with the cygnets head several inches above her parent I could have lost critically important images due to focussing issues. Opportunities such as this were few and far between and so when they did come along it was a case of making sure that I didn’t make any stupid or unnecessary mistakes.
