Photos by Jodi Cobb @jodicobbphoto. The Olympics are drawing to a close, but have given insights into the lives and traditions of the people of South Korea. A few years ago, I was commissioned to photograph impressions of the capital, Seoul, through all four seasons. I found a fascinating mix of enduring traditions, futuristic vision and a delightful eccentricity.
1. A model twirling in “hanbok”, the traditional, distinctive and gorgeous attire of the Korean people. Worn daily until a century ago, it’s now saved for ceremonies and celebrations.
2. Looking inside the Jogyesa Temple at a golden Buddha statue, with winter trees reflected in the glass window.
3. A businessman leaving the Gangnam subway station during morning rush hour.
4. A groundskeeper sweeping the steps of the National Museum. Decorated with images of the pyramids, the steps are a surreal trompe l’oeil [trick of the eye], and create a confusing and strange visual illusion.
