Photo by @davidburnettfoto // What must he have been thinking? Assuming that after skiing for 50km (about 31 miles) in just over two hours, you could think at all. He didn’t win. He didn’t place. He finished 51st out of a group of over 70. In a race that covered just over two hours, he was 17 minutes behind the winner. As he lay there on the snow, his heart and lungs kept trying to gasp for all the air which had been missing for those fifty kms. Was he wrapped in disappointment or was it simply an attempt to find a way to breathe again? In the company of the top cross-country skiers in the world, just finishing this close should be something to celebrate, and maybe as he lay there the disappointment was slowly washed away by the knowledge, which the crowd assumed from the start, that he belonged to a very small, very elite group. I hope so... for the way these skiers have honed their bodies, so perfectly, matching every breath to a stride over snow, you can’t help but simply watch them in amazement. And you know that when he arises, when he puts those skis on again, he will still be one of the fifty best cross country skiers in the world. Photograph ©2018 by David Burnett/IOC/Contact
