Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety Mute swan in threat posture – There are few things in UK natural history that are as beautiful as an adult swan in threat posture. This image was captured at dawn and shows the adult male gliding confidently in the direction of his arch nemesis, a Canada goose. Why the male has such a pathological loathing for these birds I’ll never know but his response is as predictable as it is menacing! As soon as the geese dare to touch down on this half-mile long long lake the swan’s attention is captured and he will not rest for a moment until the geese flee terrified from their aquatic misjudgement. Of course this always offers various opportunities to capture some interesting behavioural images and this one captures the moment when the swan starts his first display of dominance. As the swan was gliding toward me I typically try and wait for a moment such as this, when the head is framed by the arching tail feathers and I’m always careful to place the bird in the upper portion of the frame. This way I’m able to include the whole of the reflective blur, itself an inevitable consequence of shooting exactly at water level but I find it negatively distracting if part of this relefction is lost from the bottom of the frame. This low angle approach also creates a much greater feeling of intimacy and also serves to make the background more distant, thereby throwing it further out of focus.
