“Dancing” Cassowary, Queensland, Australia // Photo by Kevin Schafer – @schaferpho @ナショナルジオグラフィック – They have been called the “most dangerous birds in the world," a reputation almost entirely undeserved, but easy to understand after a quick glance at their feet, which could certainly inflict a terrible wound. (Think: the Velociraptors in Jurassic Park) I have spent several weeks in their company, and found them to be amazingly calm and unaggressive if given sufficient space. After all, with no real predators they are masters of the forest, and also (in this case) the beach. In fact, the greatest threats to these handsome creatures are cars: every year, several are run down on the roads that criss-cross their tropical habitat. It remains to be seen whether these ancient creatures can survive in a human-dominated world. As for the “Dancing” part? I think this splendid bird simply decided to head back into the forest, but it was an irresistible pose. #endangeredbirds #wildaustralia #longlivecassowaries #dinosaurdance
