@stevewinterphoto @natgeo Saturday is World Wildlife Day - Big Cats!! Big cats are some of the most revered species on the planet – but they’re under serious threat around the globe. Africa’s most iconic cat – the lion - has suffered drastic declines in the past two decades, down from once over 200,000 individuals to fewer than 20,000 today. But there are some hopeful and extraordinary things happening across Africa where lions have been thrown a lifeline. Just last week, the conservation NGO @AfricanParksNetwork successfully translocated the first two of 10 wild lions to Liwonde National Park in Malawi, in a project supported by the Dutch Government, @Lionrecovery and @LeonardoDiCaprioFdn, that will see wild lions gracing the plains once again. Lions are being brought back after the last one was seen four years ago, and it’s been even longer since breeding lions were found in the park. @AfricanParksNetwork assumed management of Liwonde on behalf of the government in 2015 and have spent the last three years securing the park, training rangers, removing snares, preventing conflict, and reviving the park to become an ecological and economical hub for the region. @AfricanParksNetwork currently manages 14 parks across Africa, protecting more than 26 million acres with the largest ranger force for any one NGO on the continent. They’ve returned rhinos and lions to Akagera in Rwanda, brought cheetahs back to Malawi and moved 500 elephants across that country, and they provide thousands of people with healthcare, education and employment. They are living proof that well-run protected areas can provide countless benefits for people and wildlife alike.
