This bearded seal was relaxing on a piece of glacial ice in a fjord on Svalbard. Like all ice dependent Arctic seals, bearded seals are facing new challenges; sea ice has been declining in the fjords around the Arctic archipelago where I photographed this animal. The bearded seal’s future is entwined with the future of polar bears of Svalbard, because these seals are the most important forage species for bears that have remained inshore. Any polar bears that have failed to get out to the sea ice to hunt their favoured prey of ringed seals will attempt to prey on bearded seals instead -usually below glaciers around Svalbard’s coastline.
