@NMAAHC here, taking over the @スミソニアン博物館 Instagram account for the week! We’ll be highlighting #HiddenHerstory to celebrate #WomensHistoryMonth. Up first: Sadie Tanner Mossell Alexander.

In 1921, Alexander was the first African American woman to receive a Ph.D. in economics in the U.S., and she became the first African American woman to earn a law degree from the University of Pennsylvania Law School in 1927.
As a student, she was the first African American woman elected to the University of Pennsylvania Law Review, and later the first to pass the bar at age 29.
Alexander is quoted to have said, “I knew well that the only way I could get the door open was to knock it down.” During her career, which spanned more than 50 years, she used her skills as a lawyer to advocate for racial equality. She served as the first national president of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., secretary of the National Urban League, and was appointed by President Harry Truman to serve on the Committee on Human Rights in 1947.
Stay tuned this week for more stories of women like Sadie T. M. Alexander! ?: Sadie Tanner Mossell Alexander, Ph.D. graduation, University of Pennsylvania, June 1921
