It’s @NMAAHC and we’re back with another #HiddenHerstory! Today, we’re celebrating artist Loïs Mailou Jones.
In the face of racial and gender discrimination, Jones was very rare as an African American woman painter to gain fame abroad during the Harlem Renaissance in the 1930s and 1940s.
She opened the door to the fine arts world at a time when African Americans were not allowed to show their work at most galleries and exhibitions. Instead, Jones had her white friends submit artwork on her behalf or anonymously.
Her courage helped spur the desegregation of museums, after she received many prestigious awards under a false identity.

Jones later founded the art department at Palmer Memorial Institute in North Carolina, an African American prep school. A year later, she was recruited to join the art department at Howard University, where her art course influenced many artists, including Elizabeth Catlett. Jones’ career as an artist and educator spanned 70 years.
Check back this week for more stories of women who helped shape history! #WomensHistoryMonth #5WomenArtists ?: Loïs Mailou Jones, "Self Portrait," 1940, in Smithsonian's @americanartmuseum
