Andy Warhol’s striking painting ‘Most Wanted Men No. 11, John Joseph H., Jr’ will be a highlight of our Post-War and Contemporary Art Evening Sale in New York on 17 May.⠀

Painted in 1964, the work depicts the 22-year-old armed robber wanted by the New York City police department. The painting belongs to a series featuring 13 of the ‘most wanted’ men.⠀

By presenting criminals in this way, Warhol aligned them with his earlier celebrity portraits. The artist himself later commented, ‘Nowadays if you’re a crook you’re still considered up there… This is because more than anything people just want to become stars.’⠀
