Image by @Joel Sartore | This is Azuri, a fun, feisty, 32-year-old bateleur eagle at @thelosangeleszoo. “Bateleur” is French for “tumbler” or "juggler," which makes sense because this species has a habit of rocking its wings from side to side when gliding. They can be found in Sub-Saharan Africa and are opportunistic hunters and scavengers, feeding on anything from smaller birds to mammals and carrion. Currently, the bateleur eagle is listed as near threatened due to habitat loss, capture for international trade, incidental poisoning and pollution. Azuri is part of the L.A. Zoo’s Bird Show and acts as a fantastic ambassador for his species.
