Katsushika Hokusai enjoyed a lucrative relationship with the novelist, poet, critic and scholar Takizawa Bakin. Together they collaborated on 18 books, with Hokusai providing illustrations for Bakin’s scenes.

This scroll depicts the bandid Lu Zhishen, taken from Bakin’s novel ‘Outlaws of the Marsh’. Lu was known for his strength, justice and loyalty as well as his comic touch – a monk that chose to settle scores with his iron monk’s staff instead of scriptures.
