Photo by @amivitale. The pristine Mathews Range is home to Namunyak Wildlife Conservancy, an area of 850,000 acres. These mountains are sky islands in the dry surrounding plains. The Conservancy was established in 1995 and has helped protect one of the last great stretches of African wilderness. Namunyak serves as a critical wildlife refuge for many species and holds populations of giraffe, gerenuk, leopard, African wild dog, impala, greater kudu and many bird species. The conservancy is particularly important for elephant as they move seasonally between the Mathews Range and the Mt. Kenya and Ngare Ndare Forest, a route they have been using for decades.
