The Darien Gap - Photo by Kevin Schafer – @schaferpho @ナショナルジオグラフィック – It is one of the wildest places I’ve ever been, far beyond the end of any road. In fact, this tropical wilderness, on the border of Panama and Colombia, remains the only gap in the world’s longest road - the Pan-American Highway. Many people believed that the jungles and swamps, and virulent diseases, proved too much for the road-builders. In fact, there were a host of compelling reasons NOT to connect the highway through the Darien: cost, of course, but also livestock disease, drug trafficking and the largely negative impacts the road would have on wildlife and indigenous peoples. Thus it remains largely intact, a splendid wilderness that requires considerable effort to explore. This view is from the summit of Pirre mountain, looking across a rare, unbroken forest canopy at unnamed hills and mountains. Believe it or not, it is a view that gladdens my heart. #dariengap #panamalandbridge #panamerican
