Red fox habitat – Those that have followed me on Instagram for some time now know that I bang on endlessly about, not only the value of working close to home but also revisiting these familiar places time and time again. I consider myself a pretty experienced wildlife photographer, having made my living from it for 15 years and yet it both bewilders and occasionally horrifies me how I have often missed the blindingly obvious. The scene here for example shows a red fox adolescent, nearing independence and standing alert as the last few rays of sunlight illuminate its forest home. Though I’m unable to use a hide at this location I don’t doubt that I could have sat a lot closer, and also used a much bigger lens, my 600mm F4 as opposed to the 200mm end of my 200-400, as I have done here. The reason that I’ve done this is simply so that I can include the habitat, so stunningly beautiful do I find it and with every turn of my lens, and with the subsequent increase in magnification, this image gets less and less interesting and more and more one dimensional. Go in really close and all I’d end up with is yet another frame filling image of a fox, granted in nice light, to my mind at least, bearing no comparison to this more environmental scene. The reason that I’ve been disappointed is because I worked at this site for about 7 years, always with badgers and this kind of image just never occurred to me. So please, if I can give you one piece of advice today, take a step back, give your subject more room to breathe and have a look at the environment in which you see it. You might just be very surprised as to how beautiful the overall scene looks.
